We Want It All

World premiere in Lugano, Switzerland

Emio Greco | Pieter C. Scholten

Is this the end?

It ain't much I'm asking, if you want the truth
Here's to the future
Hear the cry of youth (hear the cry of youth) (hear the cry of youth)
I want it all, I want it all, I want it all and I want it now
(Queen - I Want It All)

Especially for their 25th anniversary, Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten are creating a road trip through their oeuvre, with urgency as the underlying motive: WE WANT IT ALL.

Closing scenes of their almost 60 creations form the starting point. After all, for the choreographers the end of each performance does not mean a definitive conclusion but leaving behind a statement in preparation for a new beginning. As an exhausted Greco literally whispered at the end of his first solo Bianco in 1995: Ne me quitte pas.

The end, the 'behind', offers the possibility of a beginning, a 'before'. What once was can be brought back to the now, what is yet to come can already be evoked in the now. The meaning of then is the starting point for a new perspective. What was normal and what is the new normal? Back to the future or The future is back?

The body is 'now' and stands in the field of tension of past and future, of melancholy and utopia, childhood and adulthood, innocence and guilt. It is not one or the other, it is both: a synthesis and intensification, deconstruction and construction in one. Also the end is an end and an and. That is why in many choreographies the Bis is used as a finale, not for the sake of repetition but as a look ahead and a possible future.
